Corrective Waves – Zig Zag’s & Flats
Serving as one of the most complex formations to identify ahead of the “herd,” but at the same time being one of the most profitable, zig zags and flats amongst Elliott wave corrections are key when developing and elaborating on one’s knowledge of wave counts.
Indeed, any strong move (impulse) in price, action it is usually followed by a counter move, which is typically traders booking profits. Depending on the depth of the counter trend, one could deduce that traders think the previous trend is over and they are looking to catch the top of the newly assumed trend. Those traders who caught the initial impulse wave then re-enter the trade, most likely at a better price, which is why price action tends to be very indecisive in this phase. As touched on in an earlier chapter, these are counter waves to the impulse wave known as corrections or threes. There are three different types of corrections: Zig Zag, Flat and Triangles and we will better equip you to notify these waves.
Zig Zags are the easiest of the corrections to identify and complete in a shorter time than the other corrections. It’s labeled ABC and both A and C ALWAYS subdivides into 5 wave impulse or diagonals. The B wave ALWAYS subdivides into 3 wave pattern of any sorts (zigzags, flat, triangle, or combination thereof) and NEVER retrace beyond the beginning of wave A. Below is a five wave impulse followed by a zigzag with an illustration of the sub-waves.

On rare occasions, zigzags will occur twice, which is known as a double zigzag or at most three time, a triple zigzag. A double or triple zig zag is simple two or three zigzag waves combined with a wave labeled as X, and the zigzags are labeled as W Y and Z. Below are examples of double and triple zigzags respectively. (The X wave can take the form of any one of the corrections.)

Guidelines of the Zig Zag Correction:
Wave A & C usually subdivides into impulse waves.
Wave C usually extends beyond wave A
Wave B usually retraces between 38.2% and 78.6% of wave A
When forecasting wave C, the line parallel to that connecting the beginning of wave A and the end of B, when placed at the end of wave A, wave C usually hits this line.
