The best places to catch a movie in Abu Dhabi

VOX Cinemas

Lots of events and festivals are held at the nine screens VOX Cinemas at Marina Mall boasts, but for regular feature films it offers standard screenings as well as VOX Max, which boasts premium VIP seating. There’s also the delightfully decadent VOX Gold: these screens are intimate and private with fully reclining armchairs arranged in pairs, with their own private tables and adjustable footrests. There’s even a dedicated food menu including hot dogs, gourmet mini burgers, sandwiches and oriental-style starters – you’re spoiled for choice.

Ticket prices: Standard Dhs35, VOX Max Dhs40, VOX Gold Dhs120.
Pros: There are XX screens and lots of different viewing options to choose from. It even sells cupcakes!
Cons: It’s one of the more popular cinemas, so it can get crowded at peak times. The staff bringing in food for people can be distracting.
Best for: Buying a more expensive ticket (VOX Gold) to indulge in the experience of going to the cinema in style.

Grand Cinemas

Grand Cinemas loves its 3D movies: it offers RealD, with a mesmerising picture and crystal-clear digital surround sound, ensuring you catch each and every moment of the movie. Regular moviegoers can buy a Grand Entertainment Card to get a 50 percent discount on eight movie tickets a month at Grand Cinemas across the UAE. There are also plenty of food options, including popcorn, drinks, cheesy nachos and even Nutella crêpes. Yum!
Ticket prices: Standard Dhs25, 3D Dhs40.
Pros: Grand Al Mariah is very quiet, so you’re less likely to get interrupted by people talking and using their mobile phones.
Cons: Grand Abu Dhabi Mall is not the most aesthetically pleasing of cinemas and could really do with a revamp.
Best for: Grand Abu Dhabi Mall is in a great location because of everything that’s in the immediate vicinity – shops, eateries and the Co-op supermarket are very convenient.

Eldorado

The Eldorado Cinema was one of the first cinemas in Abu Dhabi; as a result it’s certainly not the most up-to-date venue in town. Still, it has two screens showing the latest releases in a clean and friendly environment. Films are usually in English, with French and Arabic subtitles, and the cinema occasionally screens Arabic movies. However, note that the films are often very heavily edited.
Ticket prices: Standard Dhs25, balcony seat Dhs30.
Pros: The downtown location is very convenient, and the tickets are reasonably priced.
Cons: There’s no wheelchair access: to get to the screens you’ll need to ascend two flights of stairs.
Best for: An old-school cinema experience and for catching Arabic films.

Cine Royal

Cine Royal currently operates at Khalidiyah Mall and Dalma Mall in Abu Dhabi: the former has nine screens and the latter has 14. As well as the latest releases, it shows a diverse range of feature films from various regions, including the Middle East and Bollywood. Luxury, comfort and the viewing experience are priorities for Cine Royal and it offers viewing classes to suit every viewer: Standard, Premium, Platinum and Royale.
Ticket prices: Standard Dhs35, Premium Dhs50, Platinum Dhs60, Royale Dhs100.
Pros: The Dalma Mall location is very convenient for people who live off island.
Cons: The food options here are fairly limited.
Best for: This is the best all-rounder, and with many screens you won’t feel packed in like cattle.

Al Raha

Al Raha Cinema recently opened in Al Raha Mall and has been a welcome addition for people who live in Al Raha, Al Bandar, Masdar City and the Khalifa Cities, ensuring they don’t have to travel all the way downtown to catch a movie. Catering for all the expats in the vicinity, it screens the latest Hollywood blockbusters and kids’ flicks. There are plenty of food options available, including chips, sweets, chocolate and crêpes, so you won’t go hungry during the movie, and there’s also the convenience of the cinema’s location in a mall, so you can see a movie and do your weekly food shop on the way home.
Ticket prices: Standard Dhs25, 3D Dhs40.
Pros: The standard tickets are pretty cheap, and the cinema’s location is particularly convenient for those who live off island.
Cons: It only has two screens, so when it’s busy it gets quite crowded.
Best for: People who live off island.
